Hmm a interesting reply.

Now my question:: if I wanted to do this programmatically from a C program--
for example like Apple's BonJour protocol does OR like microsoft
DirectPlay's Lobby functionality used to do--- how to do this ?

I believe BonJour protocol multi-casts information about current computer
over lan-- so other clients can find a computer. Does DirectPlay also do
this ?

Nmap will probably not be doing this (and that makes it interesting).

Has anyone who has hacked around with nmap's source code OR otherwise
knows-- tell me how this can be done by sockets programming ?

Thanks and Best Regards,
NS
