Thanks for correcting me :) I thought they discontinued support after 2, and not 3 years. It's difficult to imagine why that might be happening. Try running the gnome-panel from console $ gnome-panel --replace after you log into gnome and then click on the shutdown button. An error message there might point to something interesting.
