All my documents and publications are made in LaTeX using Kile. I also know about another tool called TeXmaker. Lyx has the disadvantage that it "generates" LaTeX from a WYSIWYG text. The LaTeX it generates is often mangled up and not very optimal. Real LaTeX gurus do not like Lyx (my personal opinion). In any case, you get used to typing in native LaTeX code, after a few hours of working with LaTeX. The best way to learn laTeX would be by hacking some LaTeX files. You can get some files to try your hand on, from: http://www.profpartha.webs.com/teachlatex.htm
