Squid will block all the traffic which passes through it, and is
directed to facebook.com. But, if the request for the web page does
not go through squid, it won't get blocked.

Firefox didn't open www.facebook.com, because you might have setup the
proxy server to be the squid machine (which, in this case, is your own
machine).

If you specify the same proxy settings in elinks, then facebook will
be blocked in elinks as well. But, if there is no proxy setting for
elinks, and it has direct internet access, then it won't get blocked.
For how to setup the proxy settings in elinks, you can find it out in
detail from elsewhere. (Hint: Hit 'O'). Also, note that elinks is
affected by your environment variables as well (HTTP_PROXY and others
...). See `man elinks`.
