first you need to certain packages which you will get by

sudo apt-get dpkg-dev dpkge-dev-el

it include apps like fakeroot to get things done.

Then get the source from the kernel.org untar in
in /usr/src/

then follow the helpful instruction in README.
like
make O=/home/<username>/build/kernel menuconfig
follow it  and configure by removing modules providing support to hardwares
that you dont have in your system.
and also it has some obselete module supporting old devices.
