I think they are trying to make it as simple as it can, am myself is dedicated Linux user. To be frank i use gnome-shell more extensively, what would you do if you want to do some programming or you want to do kernel upgrade, to patch it or to install a driver etc... You can do tons of stuff in shell that GUI aren't capable of. By making shell disappear i think they will come up with all that functionalities like permission changing, pattern matching search etc..
