Not every geek(not including you) ;)
most people(even geeks) need to go for the quality of the components as well
apart from the supported types.
Most geeks are aware of that there could be problems to get linux working
well, but the quality and surely the brand can't be put aside at all.

And as far as my experience says, Dell laptops didn't have any linux related
problems(not many) before but for the new series they have launched a few
months ago so probably
I don't want to go in flame war of brands, but in sub range laptops, at this
time only Dell(with there new series) and Asus(mostly) can be relied over
hardware reliability in the market (though personal user experience may vary
for specific combinations ).

So I feel there is still a long way ahead for fully compatible linux laptops
to be available(until Narendra's plan succeeds :) )
