If not: Install the package *pavucontrol, *then go to *Applications*->*Sound & Video *->*PulseAudio Volume Control. *Check to see if anything is off, and tweak around. Okay, does the sound play when you login, kinda african drum beat sound? Or it doesn't play at all, like ever?
