So its just upto you if you wish to install anti-virus packages or not. I have been using Linux for over two and a half years now without encountering a single malicious program. Hence in my opinion even if you don't install it .. your computer system will not crash immediately. Moreover since you are a user of gmail which again implements the attachment scanning at its end effectively you don't have to worry about that too.
