**Linux is not as prone and vulnerable to viruses as Windows.
So its just upto you if you wish to install anti-virus packages or not. I
have been using Linux for over two and a half years now without encountering
a single malicious program. Hence in my opinion even if you don't install it
.. your computer system will not crash immediately.
Moreover since you are a user of gmail which again implements the attachment
scanning at its end effectively you don't have to worry about that too. Yes
if you were using another email client / service then you would have perhaps
required to scan the attachments you downloaded.
