When grub rescue says "Unknown Filesystem", it's probably because it does
not recognize the partition table (Mostly happens when Windows creates a
partition). Updating grub generally solves it. I think the grub rescue
prompt is not from the CD, rather fromm the HDD.

Did you set the BIOS option to boot from the CD Drive??

Also, python is a required dependency to many packages in Ubuntu, removing
it is not permitted on a stable release. Check my output when I tried it:

$ sudo apt-get remove python
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 libpurple0 : Depends: libgstfarsight0.10-0 (>= 0.0.3) but it is not going
to be installed
              Recommends: libpurple-bin but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

And, evidently it can break the sytem.
