As far as drive failure is concerned, it may occur due to multiple reasons and to any brand's hardware. Seagate or WD then becomes your personal choice. But before you jump to USB 3.0, consider these points: 1. How often do you want to dump data onto the drive ? Is it frequent, in that case go for USB 3.0 2. Or is it just to offload data from your primary storage, in case of which go for 2 TB. There's no point in going for faster transfer speed and less storage if you fall short of space in a shorter span of time than anticipated ,or speed being a bottleneck in case you dump data quite frequently for there to occur significant performance difference. After all an external drive is just for storage! So inspect your usage patterns once again and then I suppose your choice would be easier.
