certain files. However, if you installed the xampp setup via the tar file or
if it is anywhere other than your "home" folder belongs to root. What you
need tot do to get off the ground is to allow yourself, i.e. the user
ownership of the files and have permissions to write and execute them.
"./*" means all files in the current directory. By default it mostly doesn't
include folders.
to change ownership of the folder, <test>,
$cd <test>
$chown <username> ./*
if you want to change this for particular files only then
$chown <username> ./<file1> ./<file2>
What this does is, it changes the ownership of every file to the username
specified.

you can learn more about chown by typiing
$man chown

Now you own these files, but they may still not be executable, so
$chmod +x ./*
if you want to change this for particular files only then
$chmod +x ./<file1> ./<file2>
this changes the permissions of all files on this folder to executable.

remember these are very basic permissions and generally frowned upon. These
will get you off the ground but like Icarus if you fly in the sun, the wax
will melt and you'll plummet to the ground. So I beg you to read the manuals
properly and set the file permissions properly.

These problems were faced by me and this is how i started by getting past
them. If I have given some erroneous info plz correct me @luggers! :)
