the touchpad would mysteriously stop working on my ubuntu 11.10 too. apart from the tips mentioned in this thread, also noticed sometimes it would reset itself to off when connecting a mouse, or if some keys were accidentally pressed which toggle it on and off. the keys are the function key 'FN', and one of the keys on the top row, that has an icon depicting a pointed finger on a touchpad. just pressing the two together toggles the touchpad on again.
