I am afraid I have not used gammu or gnokii, I did use http://pypi.python.org/pypi/sms and kennel. I find sms library quite easy to use. If you know what dev file your device shows up as. I have used Ustarcom 3g modem and Reliance Netconnect for this purpose. If you do try the package, I can help you debug it.
