Also there are lot of concepts which I need to know like what is this line
doing?

echo >&2 "$PN - keep a log file of login and logout time stamps, $VER

As per my knowledge 2 is the file descriptor and >&2 redirects any O/P to
this file. But here is something else going on which I am not able to
understand.
