LibNi uses XFCE 4 desktop environment which is quite light and will run on old hardware. But there are certain issues that you may face like when running Libre office or other heavy applications which requires more RAM and higher processor speed to work efficiently. As Mihir is saying you may also try LUbuntu which uses LXDE environment which is even more lighter than XFCE but still in that case also if you run heavy application the may either hang or crash.You can also try this http://pcfluxboxos.wikidot.com/ it uses fluxbox or DSL.
