Got hold of a compaque three years back, and I use it all day - that is to say I don't shut it down during the entire weekend. Its doing pretty fine even till now. I had taken the service once as part of warranty. The DVD writer does not work any more. The battery backup has gotten down to half an hour. Everything else is doing just fine.
One important point is you might wanna stick to ATI for graphics. NVidia does not provide any support to the kernel developers, so if you get an NVidia graphics, you would have to reinstall their proprietary driver every time you recompile the kernel.
