Once the project start getting bigger managing code in perl or shell
scripts becomes humongous , now in web 2.0 or the next web x.0 scenarios
i advice look into python and ruby as a language also look into scenarios
how you are gonna manage the cloud kind of environments . Look into tools
like puppet and salt for that matter start with sshpt

there are tons of work out there to done look at openhatch.org project for
a start . the problem with admin/devops kind of work is you need to get
exposed to the environment to make you think or you can create a small one
with few virtual machines but nothing beats real world experience in terms
of learning , volunteer to projects like Fedora , Wikimedia or Mozilla for
there Admin activities to come to speed.
