Hello,

I am writing to request your help in a very disturbing case of a 10 year old
girl who is fighting for her life.
Her name is Lavina Velman and she was a lively and beautiful child until one
day tragedy struck.

Four years ago, Lavina Velman was returning home from the kindergarten when she
was hit by a car.
The recovery was hard and at one time her life depended on a breathing machine
in a hospital.
On 24th of December 2004, Lavina received as donation a semi-portable breathing
machine she could use at home.
Lavina's life had begun to return to normal. She could move her hands and could
stay without the breathing machine for up to 10 hours.

A new tragedy struck in October last year when an electricity black out caused
Lavina's breathing machine to stop.
The black out lasted for a few hours, so long that even the breathing machine's
batteries ran out.
The child panicked and went into cardiac arrest. The medics were very skeptical
regarding her chances of survival.

Now the only solution is an operation in a hospital in Sweden (Karolinska
University Hospital).
The costs for the transport and operation are around $30,000.
Lavina's family lives in Sofia, Bulgaria. They are quite poor and have been
able to gather only a small part of that amount.
Please make a donation to support Lavina and her grief torn family. Please help
her in her fight to survive.

Your donation, whatever the amount, is greatly appreciated and can make a
difference.

Donations can be made via check or money order to:

Please make checks payable to: VICTOR VELMAN .

Thank you very much in advance!
Silvia and Bill Durham, trying to support a worthy cause

We met the Velman family last summer and then again this February while
travelling to Bulgaria.
We work with a non-governmental organization for children's needs, concerns and
rights, "SOS Children's Villages", which carries out activities in many
countries, including Bulgaria.
This letter is not associated with "SOS Children's Villages", but it is a
personal attempt to raise funds for a truly special and heart breaking case.

You can't imagine the grief the family had to endure for the past years. Mr
Velman had to quit his job in order to stay with his daughter who needs
constant supervision.
Lavina has a little brother, Valentin, who's only 8 years old but shares the
family's grief. I was deeply touched by his tears as he was talking about his
sister and telling me how much he wished she would get well.

The family's efforts seemed to pay off, Lavina's condition was improving
gradually, and there seemed to be some light at the end of the tunnel.
Last October the hopes were shattered by an electricity blackout. The breathing
machine was rendered useless when the batteries ran off; the child panicked and
in her weakened state she went into cardiac arrest.
She was stabilized at the hospital but her overall condition had worsened.

She is diagnosed with a subdural hematoma that local hospitals in Bulgaria
don't have the necessary technology or expertise to cure.
The parents have been in contact with doctors at Karolinska Hospital, the
largest hospital in Sweden, who have assured them an operation can be done to
remove the hematoma and the chances of recovery are very good, even full
recovery.

An airline that can transport her with the life support systems has been found,
adaptors for connecting the breathing machine to the aircraft's oxygen and
power supply have already been acquired, pretty much every detail has been
arranged with the help of willing people here and there.
If the fund raising campaign succeeds Lavina and her father will travel to
Sweden for the operation and a two week recovery period and then hopefully to a
better life.
