| The Shell | ||
|
The inside of an abalone shell is lined with an iridescent mother of pearl layer that is different in every shell. The Paua shell is renowned for its bright rainbow colours and magnificent blues, but other species produce pink, red, clear and green coloured shell. The shell is tough, made up of interlocked layers of calcium carbonate (chalk) tiles that are bound together with proteins. |

The proteins give the shell the black or dark colours that you can see swirling around the stunning colours. The colour comes from the crystals which are part of the composite of the shell. The lustre comes from the interaction of light rays as they bounce at different angles from each of the crystals, so that you see a different colour of light as you turn the shell. |
