We must not allow it to meet the same fate as the adjacent Commercial Museum, 
dating from the National Export Exposition of 1899, which Penn has almost 
finished demolishing.
A daunting array of deconstruction machinery is lined up in a neat row where 
the museum building formerly stood, but no crane with wrecking ball yet.

To continue on the path to total demolition of Convention Hall would result in 
a public relations debacle for Penn. It is now crucial to enlist the support of 
our elected representatives, asking them to intercede with Penn. We and Penn 
have a civic duty to not allow that loss.
Unfortunately, the elaborate carved limestone friezes that have left town were 
highlights of Convention Hall's corners at both ends. We'll be gathering on 
Civic Center Boulevard as close to Convention Hall as the scaffolding permits.
It is hoped that the University will be willing to discuss incorporating these 
parts of Convention Hall intact into their proposed, but not yet designed, 
Center for Advanced Medicine.
More details are expected to emerge at a 1 PM news conference with Mayor John 
Street.

I'm sure you have at least a cursory awareness of the rich and varied history 
of Convention Hall, and so I won't rehash it in detail here. This is where you 
can help make a difference.
According to Hack, the structure of the stands provides the support for the 
roof, such that removing them to open up space for reuse would be non-trivial. 
Your involvement is essential. We are asking our elected representatives and 
officials to join with us in standing up for Philadelphia's history as writ 
large in our Convention Hall at the former Philadelphia Civic Center.
