Physical product vs digital product.
-----------------------------------

Hi friend,

Products being sold online can generally be divided
into two categories: physical product and digital
product.

Physical goods are self-explanatory: you are looking
at one right now (that’s your monitor!).

Digital products, on the other hand, are products
(or files) that appear in electronic format. Unlike
a physical product, you cannot touch or feel a digital
product because of its electronic nature.

One good example is an eBook you have probably
purchased or acquired in your hard drive. Other types
of digital products include templates, audio, video,
software, and script files.

Now, is there really any debate as to whether selling
a physical product is better than selling a digital
product? Or is it the other way around?

Consider the following pros and cons.

Physical Product
=================

Pros:
* You can touch, feel, taste or smell the product.
* Physical products can be sold at mark-up prices
(especially high-ticket ones).
* If you own a conventional store or business of some
kind, or you can acquire hard goods at wholesale
prices, then selling hard goods is for you.

Cons:
* Low margin in p’rofits as they usually get eaten by
delivery expenditures and cost of acquisition.
* Involves a lot of trust between vendor and buyer.

Digital Product
================

Pros:
* High margin in p’rofits as cost of delivery is
f’ree and Credit Card processing fees are small, they
are often negligible.
* Customer can acquire the product almost instantly
via simple download after payment is made.
* Delivery process can be automated, something which
cannot be done with physical goods.

Cons:
* Digital products are easily duplicable and passed
around due to their nature. If your product falls in
the hands of an unscrupulous customer, he can easily
give your product away for f’ree to his friends and
contacts.
* Creating your own digital product involves tapping
into your “intellectual” asset. In other words, it
takes a lot of expertise and knowledge on your part
to create a quality digital product, especially if it
is an Information Product of some kind.

At first glance, it seems that I am trying to
equivocate the pros and cons for both the types of
products.

However if you personally ask me, I tend to favor
selling digital products because of its high margin
in p’rofits. I do not have to incur additional costs
in delivering the product either, other than paying a
small percentage to the Credit Card processing
company for each payment made by my customers.

While this is the surface of my favoritism over
digital products, this does not mean that selling one
type of product is better than the other.

If writing or product creation is not your forte, you
might do well just selling hard goods. Otherwise,
taking advantage of the digital product’s nature and
selling it can be your ticket to online success as
well. It’s your choice.
