THE ILLINOIS & MIDLAND
I&M extra 61 South, a repainted SD18 leading two of the former IC SD20's, 82
and 80, shut down the 80 after the I&M dispacther called from Springfield at
6:00pm Thursday to inform crew they were starting several large brush fires
and corn field fires west of Petersburg.
The crew made a run for the Petersburg hill, but ended up stalling and
doubling the train into the siding at Tice, Illinois, just East of the
Sangamon River bridge. The Athens FD had a brush pumper standing by at Tice
if needed, but unit was dead and no more fires. Firefighters from Athens
truck told me they understood that some of the fires were so lareg they were
being let to burn out themselves.
Take it from someone who has put out many a field fire, they are NO FUN!
