I have a waybill for IC 8730 dated 11/12/99 moving to Coatesville, PA, via
IC,MEMPH,NS. (This engine is going to the Brandywine Valley Railroad, deep
in the heart of Tuscan Red territory.)
This does not have SOU, nor CR in the routing. Those paper railroads of NS
don't exist in the waybill routing, take it from an old operator-clerk who
used to deal with waybills before becoming a dispatcher. When I worked at
Tolono in the late '60s, the N&W was the road that had the waybills, not
the Wabash, even though the Wabash was (at that time) leased by the N&W.
However, the Wabash was the entity that petitioned for abandoning the
Forrest District north of Gibson City in the '80s. This was soon before NS
absorbed the Wabash.
In other words, being a paper railroad does not necessarily have anything
to do with what name appears on the originating carrier's waybill.
I know for a long time after the UP took over the MP, the waybills would
still show MP in the routing. I'll have to do some computer exploring to
see if SP or CNW still show up in waybill routing. I'll also check to see
if CC still exists in routing and if their bill road code and name are
still used.
It's interesting to note that the bill road code for the modern IC, 350, is
the same as it was for the ICG. The old, pre-merger IC's bill road code
was 351.
Terry.
