Dear JPM,
The idea of a seminar/workshop involving the industry-college & university
students and users from around Calcutta is a wonderful one. Till date it
has been on our minds that the corporates and s/w biggies should be
addressed, but the "how" embedded in that question has been very fuzzy to
us. Your suggestion to sponser the event seems to me to a be a likely way
to for Linux to make major inroads in here.
I welcome and look forward to see the active participation from all our
members in order to make it a success....but I have extra expectation from
some of you, whom I will mention very shortly.
Mr Subrata Debnath is an engineer with CESC, and an ILUG-Cal member. He
recently told me about successfully shifting some of their databases to
Sybase on Linux, from the venerable SCO....the savings in terms of license
fees are truly enormous. I suggest we capture him and if possible a few
others in his/their dept....maybe invite his boss(es) as well, and have
them speak about how they went about it..what difficulties they may have
faced....and what they plan to do based on their short experience with
Linux. (Subrata....and Tapas....are you listening? what do you say??)
Mr. Kamal Karnatak & Navneet Chola, both members of ILUG-Cal, also has been
experimenting with Linux internally at their company's IS dept. in a way to
take a fresh look past the HP-UX they have been using so long (IIRC, they
are with Jayshree Textiles, a Birla Group company)....can you guys speak
about that...??
The most important thing here is to get the word out....and as we are
having you behind us it should not be too difficult to approach an invite
the biggies...as some of the ILUG-Cal members are CS students at JU (Ketan,
Riddhi....are you guys listening??) I will be counting on your help to
have JU interact in the event. For B.E Shibpur, I think there are a few
people in ILUG-cal who can help us get accross to the Shibpur folks.
Linux is also being used at CMC, ISI at VECC, and IIMC Joka, lets us see if
we can pull some of these folks in... Darshan, can you see to the part
about inviting CMC.. ??
One of our present members is from Shipping Corporation of India Ltd...are
you using Linux internally, can you tell us something about it?
This may also be a good time to get some media mileage out of this whole
affair, for Linux in Calcutta, ILUG-Cal and of course Astralsys ;) Once we
have decided on the format of the event and themes to use for it, the event
should be announced well in advance on Linux-India,. and
Linux-India-general list. We could approach the Express Computer weekly (of
the Indian Express group) to give the event some coverage, and on my own I
can try to convince a couple of people in the ABP group to do some articles
on Linux with reference to the event. Any help in terms of media contact
from any of the members is most welcome.
We need to decide how many people we are planning to invite....whether the
event will be invitees-only or a open-door, open-forum one (I favour the
second one). And based on that we have to decide where to hold the meeting,
however this area is best let to you (ie. JPM).
I'm working on the format and content, basically a day-long
seminar-workshop-demo-Installfest fomat. I will try to post the draft
format by around the end of this week (sorry to take so long, but I having
to attend to some urgent family business).
In the meanwhile a request to all the members -- keep sending in your
suggestions, objections, comments -- anything that may help us to make this
event a success. THIS IS IMPORTANT --- Please suggest a suitable name for
this event....
Cheers,
--Indra.
