The ctrl+alt+numplus trick works if you have multiple resolution entries
in your XF86Config. Also, it works if those are *valid* entries. If you
look at the X startup messages, you'll notice that a whole bunch of
entries are deleted by X for some reason or the other. What you could is:

startx -- -bpp 16 2> /var/log/x.log
or if that refuses to work,
startx 2> /var/log/x.log

and post the contents of x.log to the list, also attach your
/etc/X11/XF86Config to your mail.
