Hi,
To set up something like that here is what you need to do:
1. Your own domain name, which you can acquired by registering & paying for
with Network Solutions Inc, USA. It costs US$ 70 to register a domain with
them, once the domain is registered and paid for you the domain is yours
for the next 2 years. After which you have to pay agin for re-newal of
registration according to the rates fixed by NetSol. (This part can be
taken care of by yourself or by an agent on your behalf, although going
through an agent will be slightly costlier).
2. The next thing is to have your domain hosted by a Service Provider.
Since you don't want to put up web-pages at this point, a simple domain
parking solution will be enough for the moment.
3. The next thing is to get a POP (Post Office Protocol) account from your
service provider, who will setup the mail forwarding for your domain. Mail
sent to any user in your domain will be recieved by this POP account. Your
Service Provider will then usually forward the mail in that account to some
account you will be having with your local ISP (VSNL, Satyam, Mantra Online
etc.). The mail is then downloaded from that account on to a machine on
your LAN, which will serve as the mail gateway for the users on your LAN.
(This portion has to be done by you) --- Usually a Linux box will be most
suitable for doing this part of the job....
