PnPdump outputs a configuration file for isapnptools without anything
being set. The output of pnpdump contains a number of options , all of which
are commented out. The entire file is divided into several sections , each
of which refers to a particular device profile as you can see under windows
system properties for any PnP device (Basic configuration settings 0 , 1,
etc as many as the card can support.) Just uncomment out the device
settings for any ONE of the profiles (all of them if You Like:-)) and run
isapnp on this result. If You do not get any error message and get a message
to the effect that some I/O port and IRQ is assigned , you have done half
the work. If You see any error message , comment out the lines recently
uncommented in reverse until you get it right. This Trial and Error method is
not really optimal, as you should do a cat /proc/dma,/proc/interrupts
,/proc/ioports to find free resources and uncomment accordingly , but as
many have problems figuring out what the settings really mean , so trial and
error will have to do.
The second half is easy if sndconf recognises your card as you may have to
otherwise load the appropriate modules - opl3 etc correctly , in order ,
with the port , dma , and interrupt specified on the command line . once you
get it right , You should write it down in your /etc/conf.modules .
This will get the card working for any generic card , supported by Linux.
bad luck for new unsupported PCI sound cards, as nothing as now on earth
will make them work.
For the Yamaha Card , the problem arises that it may be anything from an
OPL3 to one of many derivatives to OPL4. Many of them were custom OPL-SAxx
>See the sound card docs in the KERNEL docs directory. They contain a lot of
info about specific Yamaha Sound Cards and which module to compile for Whom.
Compile one for your particular OPL xxxx. and then do an insmod opl3
io=0x330 irq=7 etc.
This reminds me that I have to apologise to partho 'da as I have been
sitting on his Yamaha's pnpdump info for 2 days as I was a bit snowed under
with work . Hopefully as tomorrow, today now as I am writing this , being a
Sunday, I shall uncomment out the appropriate things and try to get it
working. If it works , try using it as a template. Alternatively, if you
have a diff card, tell me which module got it to work .I have been trying to
write up a howto for such recalcitrant cards' config and as such I would be
grateful if you could send me more details about your card. Hopefully , once
I get 5 to 6 cards' info other than ess and Yamaha,I shall post it to arup.
If it still does not work , you could try PnP util at metalan.unc.edu ,the
new name for sunsite. It is written by an Indian and as of now is the best
way to manually config *any* pnp device under the sun from the command
line, interactively. It is a 300kb download with src and docs and if you
require it , I shall mail it to you.
