Hi all,

While being connected to the net, there was a power failure leading to
shutdown of my machine (I do not have an UPS ). When I restarted it later, I
was unable to connect to the net using kppp. While I am able to dialout and
get connected to vsnl with the post-dial authentication screen coming up, as
soon as I enter the password kppp gives the message "starting pppd..." and
the modem hangs up. Upon taking a look at the system logs, I find the
following message:

Oct 4 18:04:28 localhost pppd[618]: pppd 2.3.7 started by rajat, uid 500
Oct 4 18:04:28 localhost pppd[618]: Failed to open /dev/ttyS1: Permission
denied
Oct 4 18:04:28 localhost pppd[618]: Exit.

kppp has the suid bit set, but this message continues to appear whenever I
try to connect. I could connect when working as root. What seems to be the
problem? Is it some lock file that remained upon the power failure that is
creating this problem - but then why should modem access be denied? Also,
since I am able to dial out, doesn't that mean that the modem is accessible?
The /dev entry for ttyS1 (ldir output) is:
crw------- 0 5 0 Tue Jun 22 18:34:54 1999 ttyS1

Kindly help.
TIA,

Rajat.
