One reason why I personally prefer to build up my systems from source,
is because whren you are compiling and installing it you get to see and
understand a lot about the particular s/w in question...you really get to
know what environment variables are needed by it. So, in my opinion,
once a person reaches a certain level of understanding, it is always
better to compile the s/w by hand whereever possible, at least on your
personal system(s).
the hiding of the gory details, and making packages easy to maintain &
update is certainly a good feature, at least for new, & intermediate
users, as well as when you are in a hurry. But it is not an unmixed
blessing IMHO.
