Dear friends, Astralsys Software (India) Pvt. Ltd (aka Astral) has set up a webcam to do an almost real-time web-casting of traditional style Durga Puja with its typical "ek-chala protima". The webcam has been set up at a Puja in Chetla, Calcutta. The best part of this web-casting is that about 2/3 of this entire operation is being managed by Linux boxes (The web-server is a linux-box, so is the "pipeline" which is dialling into the box at Chetla, grabbing the pics at regular intervals, and then uploading them to webserver in the US). No point in hiding that a NT box had to be used as a dial-in server at Chetla, as the cams available with Astral for the job were the only cams in their entire series that didn't have support for Linux :-( Maybe next-time it will be a Linux-only setup (yes! yes! yes! ;)....but more importantly what we have here is a solution implemented using these two OSes, and they are working smoothly. This is a first-time thing happening in these parts of the world. The setting up the cam had a lot of "iffy" bits involved. But late last night it was successfully pulled off, and this morning the site officially went online. So hold on to your seats and watch the show.... the URL is http://www.city4u.com/calcutta/puja/webcam.html Guess you guys are among the first to know about this :D Enjoy! and Viva la Linux! Cheers, --Indra. PS. I forgot the standard disclaimer ;) DISCLAIMER: This isn't a shameless plug for Astral. I do not work for/with them, and speak for myself. However, since I have been sort of co-opted (read --> forcibly abducted from bed while asleep by the little green men from Mars) by Arup to be a part of this going-ons, I thought I would finally let the cat out of the bag. Apparently, the assorted Astralites on this list (JPM + Arup) are too polite to beat their own drums *a_wide_grin* -- To unsubscribe, send mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the body "unsubscribe ilug-cal" and an empty subject line.
