Look at the /etc/XF86Config file.
1. Uncomment appropriate Modeline lines for the 800x600
and 1024x768 resolutions. This may take a bit of experimentation.
2. In the Display subsection of the Screen section corresponding to
your card and driver (located near the end of the file), add
"800x600" and "1024x768", if not already there.
3. Do
startx >& /tmp/x
then quit the X server as usual and look at /tmp/x. You will learn
a lot about what your X server is finding/doing.
CLGD 5446 should work at 1024x768 without problems (assuming you have
a good monitor).
