don't you also need to do something with "ttmkfdir -o fonts.dir" in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ttfs
see http://linux.netnerve.com/tp/ttf.html
alternatively you can install xfstt as a secondary font server. that doesn't require
fonts.scale fonts.dir etc. etc.
