Indranil, I think this could be a soln.

the root cant login from any terminal because a file named "securetty" 
exists in /etc
which has some valid terminals from which you can login. which must be 
having at present tty1 to tty6

this can be secured by anyone who has permissions to w on /etc. he/she can 
just mv securetty to some other name.

as for input devices locking up on the server. looks like a lock on console. 
will have to do some research.
