Dear Shourya and Friends,

        I was really biting my hands on this issue; but it was too late
and the message had been thrown out. I DID not want to mean that ALL
engineers are block-heads. But, to be very frank, the trend that I see
in these days is very frustrating. Almost the best of the talents do go
in for Engineering Institutes (as far as I know, in very few parts of
the world shall you find a paucity of good brains in the pure science or
pure arts streams and an abundance of them in the engineering streams;
please leave out the situation of USA --- here this state of art is
dictated by the tastes of other countries, by a vast majority; you may
refer to the student info in countries like UK, Denmark, Germany,
France...); yet after their first years or so, when most of them get
absorbed to some place they hardly find any initiative to be trained and
it turns out to be a problem to train them... And after all this
drainage (both of brain and the money) most of these newly graduated
engineers go in for some management degrees with the intention to join
as some managers. Well, what is all this ? I am left to think that the
brains that we speak of are really very vestigeal. And to make the
matters worse, the lure of big money takes away from these youngsters
their will and wish to DO something new. Result : you see and suffer as
now.

        So my admonishing really went as a vent to this unexplained
feature plus the boy's irresistible use of words that conveyed to me
that he has already started to look into everything as sole objects
rendering pleasure; you may take this reply as a serious protest to such
a base assumption.

        I am really very very sorry to have made such a general remark;
but all of it came in a sudden rush of anger. The boy has apologised,
and I do hope that he shall learn from this about his wrong assumptions;
and I too apologise for my very caustic remark which must have hurt many
others.

        Our staff picnic is on February 6, 2000; I do not mind any other
date. Why do we not have a picnic on February 13, 2000 and also hold the
monthly meeting as well ?

        I do not know whether this shall be utopian : I heard that it is
possible to hire launches and have a journey over the Ganges. This shall
be good if we can gather all our members (almost 100, as far as I know;
what does Indra say ?), and have a nice day....
