| Indra :
| *> FYI, RHL 6.0 *does* come with XF86Setup, it also comes with another
tool
| *called the Xconfigurator.... While XF86Config
| *> is definitely an opportunity to learn, it is not necessarily the best
way
| *for a beginner to face the innards of X
| *> setup.
|
| Amit :
| *I couldn't find XF86Setup, and XF86Config exists as xf86config not
| *XF86Config. I'll try Xconfigurator. According to a friend's instructions,
I
| *tried setupx, but that also doesn't exist. Surprisingly no help or
command
| *existed for 'unmount' also! Further, which monitor type should I select?
My
| *monitor is a BPL ER 14 CSV (yuck!!), and what is hsync rate and how do I
| *find it out?
| *
| a )I think Indra was referring to the raw XF86Config file usually
| residing at /etc/X11. That is a "kind" of .ini file for X
|
| b) Are you talking about umount ?
I don't know what it's called exactly - opposite to mount seems unmount,
what I meant was the command which is used as a compliment for mount, that
is unmounting file systems. I'll try man umount then...
| c) import ilug-cal.std.disclaimer
|
| Sync rates *usually* can be found in the skimpy booklet that comes
| with your manual. I have never actually seen someone "fry" his
| (her) monitor due to incorrect sync rates. There was a thread on
| this in ilug-cal about 5-6 months back. But if the gurus say yes,
| they fry.., then fry it must and probably will :) What I have
| usually seen is that incorrect rates cause flickering which
| renders the VDU useless but is recoverable (Ctrl_Alt_BkSpc).
My problem has had a temporary solution. I've selected Generic VGA and it's
running in 16 colour mode, OK for some working, atleast I won't have to just
wonder what the full menu options are. But I am still wondering as to where
the OK button is on most config screens! The SiS people said that XF86 3.3.6
contains servers for 6215 and all, under 6c2x5 - IMO that contains 6c215
which did not work for my card - Xprobeonly could not detect its chipset (or
whatever), and the XF86 site's 3.3.6 info did not contain info for 6215. So
I am in a VGA 'trishanku', not knowing whether I should download XF86 or
not.
| d) Have you run SuperProbe ?
Not yet (not that I knew about it), now that you have said about it, I'll
try.
|
| Happy SiSsing
| Warm regards
I hope this warmth is not from the overheating of my VGA card ;-)
