Hello everyone!

This is the first time I'm trying to interact with users of ILUGCAL. I have
been reading the mails since the past 2 months but wasn't interacting as I
had started using LINUX very recently and truly speaking, I couldn't really
understand what was going on. But now I feel comfortable to work on it and I
shall be working on installing Apache, Squid, Ipchains, Oracle 8i and
sendmail in a linux box pretty soon. I started off with samba server and am
encountering some probs. Could you give me some solution to my prob?

I'm presenting you with the details of what I did to try to get samba
connectivity on a WinNT Domain having Win98 client machines. I only have
modified the /etc/smb.conf file. Haven't done any enties for the Linux box
in the WinNT Domain Server. The Linux Box has the host name
Testpad". The WinNT Domain name is "DOMAIN". The users in the WinNT Domain
are "Arkay_1", "Arkay_2", "Arkay_3" and "Arkay_4". These users logon to the
Domain using Win98 machines. The Subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 and the IP
address pool that I'm using is 191.127.191.

On executing the command samba start, my Linux Box "Testpad " is visible on
every machine in the network including the WinNT Domain Server and all the
client Win98 machines. When I try to access Testpad thru the WinNT Server by
double clicking on the icon in the network neighbourhood it gives me a
dialogue box which says:
"Incorrect password or Unknown user name for \\Testpad." and presents me
with 2 fields which are: "Connect as: " and "Password: ". At this point I
enter "root" in the field "Connect as :" and provide my root password in the
Password field. Testpad lets me access the shared directories after this. I
am also able to connect to Testpad from the WinNT Domain server with the
other user names and their password as present in Testpad. I haven't created
any entries for the users present in Testpad in my WinNT Domain.

The problem starts when I try to access Testpad from Win98 clients. Testpad
is visible in Win98 clients too but on trying to access Testpad it gave me a
dialogue box which said:
Resource : \\Testpad\IPC$
Password :

I gave the root password but it didn't connect me saying "Invalid Password".

At the end I created the user accounts present in the WinNT Domain in
Testpad. And this helped me access Testpad from Win98 Clients. But I wasn't
very happy with the solution as this would mean that I would have to keep on
creating accounts in Testpad for every user who's present in the network or
outside it in order to allow him access to Testpad and thats gonna be an
administrative overhead . I did one more thing. I created an user account
for an existing user in Testpad on the WinNT Domain server and tried to
logon to the network thru a Win98 client and access Testpad. It worked! Is
this the solution? Do I have to create user accounts for every user on the
Linux Box in the WinNT Domain Server and the login thru the Win98
workstations using the user ID of the users of Linux Box in order to access
the resources? This seems to be absurd. This would again create problems
with the licensing policies I guess and is also gonna be an administrative
overhead !

I am giving you details of the lines I edited in the /etc/smbconf file. I am
mentioning ONLY the lines I edited and uncommented. The rest remain the same
as they were initially.

workgroup = DOMAIN
server string = samba server
hosts allow = 191.127.191.
load printer = yes
guest account = nobody ( I still don't know how to login as guest )
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
max log size = 50
security = user
encrypt passwords = yes
smb password file = /etc/smbpasswd

I'd be glad if you could provide some solution to my problem.
