'Detected' is not something thats really required to
happen in this context (assuming this is an external).
All you need is the correct port, and minicom to
figure out whether the modem is ok or not. Also helps
if you have a standby modem that you can use to test
on the same port.
Figure out what the port is, fire up minicom, point it
at that port (I'll leave that to you to figure out),
see whether you can get some basic commands to work (
try atz ). If you can type and get results, the modem
works, the port works. If no show, make sure you have
the correct port number, borrow someone elses modem,
alternatively connect your mouse to that and
reconfigure X, see if that works. Play around with
these combinations till something constructive
happens.
