Actually, with a shielded cable, PCs as far as 45 _metres_ apart can be
connected at upto 9600 baud. The shield ought to be connected to the
ground pin of one of the ports (only one, not both, oh! no -- that could
be dangerous). A good earth connection on the power line of each PC is
a must if you don't want to burn up your PCs. Of course if the PCs run
off the same power source then this is usually not an issue. This is
likely to be the case if they are in the same room.

Good old long serial cable. Don't see much of those since ethernet
became popular and mini-computers with terminals went out of fashion.
