Riddhi and I downloaded and had a look at RH7.0 today, within a few hours of
it's release.. Don't bother downloading it yet even from the official
mirrors as when we last saw- it hadn't made to to even metelab.unc.edu aka
sunsite yet fully. We kept getting access denied errors as the ISO's haden't
come over yet.
Some things which are truly good and some which are going to raise hell.
RPM 4- totally incompatible with earlier versions. I have been using it for
4 months now and the changes it has wrought havoc on my system . RPM files
created using it cannot be read by any lower version- the format has totally
changed- it has moved from Berkeley DB1 to DB3 . It couldn;'t even compile a
kernel source rpm a month back. I'll try again tommorow.
Openssl and openssh are now part of the pack- and run out of the box.
Finally they are catching up with SuSE. XFree86 4.0.1 - helps if you have a
decent card specially in 3D.X3.3.6 is still there.
Womder how PCQ will distribute this one- It's no more on 1 CD folks! 2 CD's
for the Install and only 240MB is used by the Redhat Installation proper in
CD2. Trial versions of 2.4 are supplied , as well as thankfully the KDE2
Beta.
Gcc 2.96 comes in this. Expect never to get a correctly compiled Kernel for
some months - the kernel compiles cleanly only on gcc2.92. There is a
compatibility 6.2 compiler, but am yet to figure out how to use it.
It's a fat beast - this one. The Documentation CD is a beast at 640MB. Think
! 640MB of DOCS! it's a full 5 CD pack this time. Links has made it to the
main distribution now- no more in powertools. Mysql afficionadoes - It 's
there along with PHP4.0.2 in the main install along with postgresql 7.0
Arup, Perl 5.6.0 finally makes it to Redhat - along with GlibC 2.1.93. This
one has so many new things in it that it seems prudent to give it a pass for
a few months for a production enviornment.
BTW- we didn't test it - But folks- it's _Sendmail 8.11.0_ along with
_Authenticated SMTP_- the cyrus SASL libraries are installed by default. 1 R
eal cool thing.
Only wish they had moved to 2.2.17 . First time in memory that a red hat
kernel is out of date before release!- it's 2.2.16 still.

TIA
