Now you were mentioning W2K ..well first of all what i
figured from my first encounter with W2K is that its
the same old NT in a newer bottle ....and one more
thing those wonderful cool applications ..(I am
talking about some games here) ran so smooth in
win95/98 platform just refused to accept w2k ..now now
dont you feel that w2k or NT in a broader sense is
linux at heart ??? protecting their resources from
regular applications :D ...what i wrote earlier ..was
about 95/98 ...platforms ...according to me NT and w2k
dont fall under regular win ....afterall how many
users have them in their home pc ?
But what you wrote is really thought provoking
...afterall win does provide a "easier" way to
communicate with your pc ....though i beleive if a
common man is subjected to linux environment before he
faces the win he will feel much more at ease and
stable with linux and eventually will feel
uncomfortable with win .....and i know a lot of guys
like that ... but yes again win did provide us with a
lot of entertainment when no other os's was doing that
(full marks to them for that)...and i guess thats one
of the main reason for its popularity ...now if we can
develop games or "cool" softwares in linux platform in
equal proportion as that of in win i guess linux will
gain as much popularity as win or even more ......

Absolutely true ... and thats one of the reason for
its stability as well ... it is getting refined day by
day thanx to the OSS movement...

Yes indeed ...during my days of training in a software
farm in B'lore i faced the similar kind of remarks ...
as i was trying to convince one of the project leader
to switch to full linux environment....now linux does
need more softwares ...but given time i think that can
be arranged ...and i think it will be peaceful to work
without the fear of that blue screen of death... after
you have written several hundred lines of code .....

No i am NOT in touch with the world of Linux advocacy
and I _do_not_ have any experience of communicating to
large groups of people ...but i do have communicated
with individuals regarding some matters and issues
...and had heart to heart talk ....
what you wrote about having a choice is true ... and
yes one can not writeoff MS that easily either after
their contributions ... but now they have come to a
sort of a deadlock situation ...either they will have
to switch over to NT altogether or debug the 95/98
versions...thats why i guess they have taken this
clever approach of w2k ....
well now a user who will buy w2k will actually get a
NT flavoured os.. which is unlike 95/98 and is stabler
...
so that after say 3-4 years they will claim that win
products are as stable as linux is (since at that time
win 95/98 will be outdated)... and try to fight back
with it ...its ok but what i think is that if more
softwares are available in linux platform ... then
they will face a real tough situation and yes again it
will be the "choice" of the user ....
Now to resolve all this we have to think seriously
about what does win have that linux doesn't and vice
versa ...or rather WHY do we use win ?
I guess the answer that will come up is mostly
regarding the less availability of softwares that i
was talking about ....
and i guess a lot of people generally the younger
generation (including me) will also highlight the
"cool" softwares and GAMES applications as well ...
apart from that ...win ( not NT or W2K mind you) is
dead meat ....
