Dear Mr Banerjee,
Here I am, again! I was hoping someone better informed than I would be
at hand to solve your X problem but not seeing anyone come forward, I
offer my two-bits-worth advice below:
If I remember rightly, you are running RH 6.2. Please try out the
following:
1. Login as your normal self (not as root). Copy the file
/etc/X11/XF86Config to a safe place in your home directory.
2. Logout, then login as root. Open the file /etc/X11/XF86Config with
your favourite editor (is it, like mine, vi?).
3. Look for where it says
Fontpath "unix/:-1"
near the top of the file.
4. Comment out this line by placing a # in column 1
5. Append the following lines below the one you just commented out:
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/"
FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"
I don't know if all the fonts listed here are in RH 6.2, but no matter.
As long as the misc fonts are there it should be okay.
6. Save the file and quit the editor.
7. Try starting X (its okay to do it as root). You can catch the
displayed messages to a file by doing
startx 2>&/tmp/xmsgs
I'd appreciate a feedback on this. If you decided to try this out and it
did work, that knowledge would puff me up quite a bit ;-) If it doesn't,
then do send me the /tmp/xmsgs file.
With all good wishes,
- Manas Laha
