About the size, I beg to differ. My laptop has a 10 gb
hdd, runs win98 and linux happily.
Well ok, I'm not a 'Download Monster' in either OS
since I have to do real work on both platforms ;), but
at the same time, I really don't have any space
constraints.
Sure I can't do audio/video processing, but I wouldn't
use a 10gb hdd for that anyway (be more like 40gb
atleast dedicated for stuff like that).
What you need to do to get going is the following:
- Get hold of a friendly distro (s.u.s.e, or mandrake)
- Repartition your hdd
- If you want to preserve win2k and repartition, get
Partition Magic (borrow it from someone for a while),
or use Fips.
- Install one of the friendly distros mentioned above
(read the specific installation guides FIRST, normally
found on the cd itself), follow the install wizards -
they're extremely well designed nowadays.
Before you do any of that, get a beginners book for
linux, read how linux / unix works.
Before you do any installations, backup all important
stuff from your win2k partition. Since given the level
of your experience with this, you may lose it
entirely.
That statement was meant to make you careful and
prepared for disaster, as opposed to commenting on
your knowledge. We all have to start somewhere :)
If you do mess up, don't feel bad, repartion,
reformat, reinstall. Us so called 'gurus' have done
that many many times in our misspent youth.
Ask for help in here if you get stuck.
Good luck.
