BTW: The situation is the same in Canada. People get
familiar with
"products" that are supported by "vendors", not at all
familiar with the
concept of Users Groups in general (Linux or
otherwise).

The different slash/etc sites can be installed
without server admins
being involved. That is one of the advantages of
using PHP.  You may have
to modify the includes to include PHPLib (if used)
being within the
current server directory, but otherwise no problem.

P.S. The server is actually still physically stored
on the computers of
Netshooter.com (Which is physically located in Western
Canada), even if
Sudhir isn't directly involved.

Nameservers point to machines here in Ottawa, and
can change at any
point as needed by the LUG.

I believe it is very appropriate to have LUG members
hosting prototype
servers for new ideas. I'm not sure if any of you
have set up PHPSlash,
PHPNuke, or other CMS systems, but it would be worth
installing a few to
check them out first before choosing one. Each has
their advantages and
disadvantages. My personal choice of PHPSlash
related to the existance
of a multi-member development team, while PHPNuke is
primarily the
project of one individual. My reasons for choice of
tools will not match
others.

*grins*

Canada itself isn't that much better for the
big-server environments.
When I was investigating managed servers for
Netshooter.com I was
considering moving my own servers to a similar
arrangement. I ended up
deciding against it and instead just increasing the
bandwidth to my
existing server (IE: 5 servers, 2 of which will be
firewalls for two
connections, 2 applications servers, and one database
server).

Given the controvercial things I host as part of my
volunteer work (See
http://weblog.flora.org for notes) it is pretty
necessary.

This is as it is on the Netshooter box.

There are other options via my server in Ottawa
which we can discuss as
well.
