dear arup and mr.laha,

i didn't need to make many changes. after doing 'make'
and 'make
install', edit the file called INITSCRIPT that you'll
find in the same
directory, and edit the line where it says
"/where/is/your/dictd_binary", and give the actual
path
("/usr/sbin/dictd", unless you modified the $PREFIX
variable at
configure-time). that's all. if at this point you
rename the file to
"dictd", set the executable bit and place it in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/ (on my
mandrake system at least), i guess it should run at
boottime. however,
for convenience's sake, i added a few lines which
would allow it to be
managed with chkconfig (and therefore ntsysv, which is
beautiful in its
simplicity, though probably available only on redhat
or redhat-like
systems). here they are:

<snip>

# chkconfig: 35 95 20
# description: a dictionary server that is configured
to \
# serve meanings to the local machine.

</snip>

these lines should be pasted before the dictd path
variable, just after
the line acknowledging the courtesy of jeff blaine.
the first number
after "chkconfig" lets chkconfig know on which
runlevels the service
should be started by default. "35" means runlevels 3
and 5. the two
following numbers (95 and 20) are the service's start
and stop priority.
i didn't have a clue what the desired priorities
should have been, so i
just caught numbers from the air and inserted them.
the "description"
line is the floating comment that you see when you
place your mouse
pointer over a particular daemon-name in, for
instance, ksysv. change it
to whatever you want. the back-slash and tab spaces
are needed for
proper formatting.

after saving changes, just do a

"chkconfig --add dictd".

if you run ntsysv now, you'll see that "dictd" now
appears as a service
in the list. or you can use chkconfig itself for finer
control.

before starting to use the software, you'll have to
write two files -
/etc/dict.conf and /etc/dictd.conf. for help on
writing these, see the
detailed instructions in the readme-s provided with
the tarball itself,
and also the fine help file of kdict.

if you need anything, just mail me.

- t.
