Minutes
-------
The meeting started with addresses from Mr. Sumitabha Das, and Mr. JP Mathew. Mr
Mathew gave the basic information regarding the new server at the PDSIT:
Hostname: ilugcal.becdu.ac.in
IP: 203.197.107.24
OS: Mandrake 8.2 (with apache, qmail, blah, blah)
Then Indranil Das Gupta - Indra da gave a brief idea regarding ILUG-CAL, it's history,
the general membership policies, and mailing list subscription procedures.
After that, we had a very very interesting and informative lecture from Prof. Pabitra
Pal Choudhury (from Indian Statistical Institute) on the fundamental concepts behind
an Operating System. This continued for around 2 hours, and as the lecture continued,
coffee and biscuits were served to all. The lecture was very helpful to newbies like
myself to grasp the basic concepts behind the the OS. All of us at ILUG-CAL would like
to thank Prof. Pal Choudhury for this lucid and informative lecture.
The next thing that came up was an introduction round, where each of the meeting
attendees introduced her/himself. It seems that we have quite an interesting mix of
members....from many walks of life:)
We had a brief history of ILUG-CAL from Indra-da when he was introducing himself.
During this Mr. Sutanu K. Ghosh pointed out that ilug-cal can try to interact with
people like assemblers,
hardware dealers, and try to make them sell at least some PCs pre-installed with
Linux. Nice idea, Sutanu-babu.
Then we had a general discussion round, where naturally, the topic on the new web
server and stuffs came up. It was decided that we would make full use of both setups
at Canada and BE College, with one setup acting as the mirror of the main (as
www1.ilug-cal.org), so that when one server goes down, the other one can immediately
take up the job. However, which setup will be the main one, and which will be the
mirror was *not* decided and we have decided to debate that out on the list.
Moreover, there was a decision to hold some kind of regular workshops
for the hard core techies and wannabe techies where things like kernel structure,
embedded systems, PVM, etc can be discussed, and people can try out their hands at
devices, boxes, etc. Mr. Saurabh K. Das also suggested that these workshops can be
alternated with workshops on lighter topics like those on gaming in Linux, multimedia
apps, etc. Mr. Mathew also added that as the PDSIT facilities can be used on Sundays,
every alternate Sundays these workshops can be held, with the hardcore ones
alternating with the lighter ones.
Apart from this, we also had some debates on why Linux is not being adopted in a large
scale in the corporate and normal Jo-user level, and how to propagate this, whether to
refer to the OS as free or not, whether the "freeness" (not according the free
software definition) creates a negative image of Linux in the mind of the non-academic
user, etc.
The meeting ended at around 15:00 hrs, IST, with Mr. Mathew showing a sample of the
famous Simputer to us, and after that, all the tuxes went back home, eager to have
their afternoon herrings
