sounds to me like your remote smtp server is the source of the problem. 
some smtp servers require the "from" address to reflect a particular
domain. some implement authenticated smtp. check whether these are set
correctly in kmail. the version of kmail bundled with kde 2.2.2 doesn't
support smtp-auth yet. for that, install kde 3, or move to another
mailing software, like "evolution" or "sylpheed-claws". i see you are
using microsoft outlook express anyway.
