There is at least one distro that allows one to start the install from 
Win95  (When I saw it Win95 was all there was.)  It also allowed the 
installer to opt for a desktop icon that would reboot the system into 
that distro much in the same way that it could reboot into MS-DOS.

There is also a product called commercial product called vmware which 
allows one Yes! to run Linux inside a Windows window.  As well as the 
other way around!  This is done via emulation of the hardware.  It is an 
unbelievable app - it could actually bore through Windows HAL and expose 
ALL the hardware - serial, parallel ports devices etc. to the system 
running in the emulator.

Real computer scientists despise the idea of actual hardware.  Hardware
has limitations, software doesn't.  It's a real shame that Turing
