Raja, You are correct. The Merriam Webster dict also agrees, defining
"intranet" as

A privately maintained computer network that can be accessed only by
authorized persons, especially members or employees of the organization
that owns it.

However, I would love to define the intranet as a restricted network
which explicitly supports HTTP.
Going back to those days when the network was not called "intranet", the
stuff that was missing was primaryly HTTP; mail (POP/SMTP) and FTP was
there in those days.

Off course, people will have there own characterising definition of the
term.
