Well, all of that depends on what kind of user you are :). If you are the click/point type, then Mandrake is the best However, with version 8.0, Dead Rat has become extremely "user friendly" (please DON'T start a flame war here :) If you can imagine a sort of GNU/Linux XP, you have got RH 8.0 :D I was quite shocked to see that the Red Hat installer probes for your video card, and then starts X for that card during installation :S And, the RH 8.0 installer uses antialiased fonts!!!!! - these guys are completely MAAD. Mandrake on the other hand has kept 9.0 things similar to things in 8.2 Both the installers are almost equivalent - from whatever viewpoint you see it They don't ask many questions - though my personal opinion is the package selection system of RH is a little better. Regarding packages - Mandrake has kernel 2.4.19, while RH uses the 2.4.18 - but that should not be much of a difference Both are extremely fast (GCC 3.2 ??) Also, note that RH does not come with any mp3 related libs - so, you would have to download mpg123, and stuffs to play mp3s in your box Moreover, this morning, Arko rang me up for a live commentry of the RH installation ;), and his installer crashed thrice . but his box has some crazy stuffs inside (cdrom drive that makes sounds like a motor cycle, SiS 6215C, ISA sound card, etc - so that might be an exception) And don't ask me about gui based tools - I do not use them unless in serious trouble :) - and when I am in serious trouble, I usually do not get the chance to use GUI tools :D I am currently using Red Hat 8.0, solely because it supports Bangla out of the box. You will have to do quite a bit of hacking to get Bangla working in Mandrake ****************************************************************************************************** WORD OF ADVICE: If you are a KDE fan, DO NOT use RH 8.0 - you may damage the computer/yourself/anything ****************************************************************************************************** -iti- sdg -- : ####[ GNU/Linux One Stanza Tip (LOST) ]####################### Sub : Random Data LOST #316 If you have need for a sequence of random bytes, type in: "head -c 16 /dev/random | mimencode" ...
